Comparison
Cocker Spaniel vs English Cocker Spaniel
Cocker Spaniel
9-14 kg · 10-14 years lifespan
A soft, people-oriented companion spaniel wearing a show coat that demands professional-level grooming.
English Cocker Spaniel
12-15 kg · 12-14 years lifespan
A merrier, more field-driven cocker: more exercise, somewhat less coat, the same velcro attachment to its people.

Who should pick which
Pick the (American) Cocker Spaniel if you want a smaller, softer, companion-first spaniel and you will actually maintain the coat - the show coat is a standing grooming commitment, not a detail.
Pick the English Cocker Spaniel if you want more field drive and stamina in a slightly taller frame with somewhat less coat: it is the better fit for walkers, hikers, and light field work.
Both are velcro dogs with long ears that need routine care and a strong dislike of being left alone. If your household is out 6+ hours a day, neither cocker is the answer.
