Why this exists
Most breed content online is written to please everyone: every breed is "great with families" and "adapts well to apartments". Then the dog spends eight hours alone, the herding instinct meets a toddler, and the animal ends up in a shelter with a note that says "we didn't expect this".
Faunitopedia helps people find a dog or cat breed that fits their real life - not the life they imagine on a good weekend. Every profile states plainly who a breed suits, who it does not, and what the daily trade-offs are. Every profile has a "do not consider this breed if" list, and we mean it.
How the selector works
The breed selector separates hard constraints (time alone, small kids, housing) from preferences (looks, size). Breeds that cannot handle your constraints are removed, not quietly ranked lower. The result shows reasons and compromises, not just a score - because a match percentage means nothing without knowing what the missing part will cost you every day.
The scoring runs entirely in your browser over a per-breed attribute matrix. No signup, no lead forms. Your answers stay on your device.
Health data by RealVetCost
Health sections on breed profiles are provided by RealVetCost, our sister project: an expert database of genetic and breed-linked conditions in 470+ dog and cat breeds, with real treatment costs. Knowing that a breed carries a serious risk of hip dysplasia or airway surgery belongs in the decision - before you fall for the ears, not after.
Health claims on Faunitopedia are conservative, standard veterinary knowledge. We do not invent statistics, and detailed data lives in the specialist database where it can be properly sourced.
What we are not
Faunitopedia is not a marketplace. No listings, no breeder advertising, no animal sales, and no commissions from anyone whose interest is that you buy an animal quickly. That independence is the whole point: our only job is that the match works for the next decade.
